The gear advisor ?
Ever since I upgraded to DSLR, many people have asked me what kind of gear to buy for their needs. Somehow I have become live wikipedia of photo gears !
Here are a couple of line-ups that I think it makes sense to begin with:
For parents:
- Canon Digital Rebel XTi w/ 18-55mm lens kit , $740
- Canon 50mm f/1.8 , $80
- Canon 85mm f/1.8, $350
Total cost : $1170
This gives you a nice setup for portrait photography and also good wide angle. This can be used for years without any more upgrade.
The Nikon equivalent ( D80 + 50mm & 85mm f/1.8, $100+$120+$380=1500 ) will set you back ~$300 more. D40 is out of the question for this setup because it does not support AF for AF lens, only newer AF-S lens ( lens with its own motor ) will work.
For the traveler:
- D40 kit, sell 18-55mm on ebay. $530-100 = $430
- Nikon 18-200mm, $749
Total cost $1179
This gives you the most advanced point-and-shoot in a light weighted DSLR package.
This setup can be upgraded by adding a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or switching to D200.
For a professional portrait photographer:
- Canon 5D $2650
- Canon 50mm f/1.4 $290
- Canon 85mm f/1.2, $1700
- many other lens beyond our reach
Total cost: $5000+
